DigiTimes reports that Apple took delivery of (not necessarily sold, but the online wait times suggest that the numbers are close) 2.4-2.6 million iPad 2s in March, which is more than its predecessor in the same time period. Apple is expected to ship over 12 million units in Q2 alone. Naturally, suppliers have begun to ramp up production of cover lenses to keep pace.
Taiwan-based TPK Touch Solutions and G-Tech Optoelectronics are eagerly expanding their capacities for cover lenses currently, with TPK expected to ramp up its cover lenses for 3.5-inch touch panels to five million units and for 10-inch panels to 2.5 million units in June, indicated the sources.
Other touch panel makers including HannStar Display, Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) and Wintek all have plans to increase cover lens output in 2011, added the sources.
The iPad 2 will likely break the original’s sales records sometime this year. We will have more hard figures at Apple’s Q2 earnings call on April 20th.
