Gabe Newell, the founder of Valve, recently said in an interview that the video game studio was looking towards the iOS and Android platform for “possible expansions with Steam”. This could mean a number of things, from a full port of the Steam distribution software (which seems very unlikely, and would almost definitely conflict with the App Store’s policies), to a companion application to view profiles and message other users—perhaps a competitor to Game Center.
Valve could also be bringing some of their popular titles, like Half Life and Portal, to iOS. Steam and many of its games are now available for Mac, and total Apple hardware ubiquity would be an impressive feat. The App Store has proven itself a viable and outrageously successful platform, so it could only be a matter of time before it’s supported alongside its PC and Mac brethren.
Valve has an agonizing history of leading users on, so take Gabe’s statement with a heaping bowl of salt.
