Accessory Review: Vaja Ivolution Top for iPad

Vaja Cases is an Argentinian company that designs luxurious genuine leather accessories for many different Apple products. Their accessories come at a hefty price, but it is money well spent. All of their accessories are handmade. Many of their products, including the Ivolution Top for iPad, are arguably the best on the market.

The Ivolution Top is made out of genuine leather. From the moment that you take it out of its box, you’ll notice that the leather has a very distinct, pleasant smell. The leather is padded, offering a very nice plush-like feel unlike any other accessory that I have ever used. It also has a rigid texture that looks and feels great. Embedded into the front cover is a sleek-looking Vaja logo made out of shiny metal.

The two sides of the case clamp to the iPad with their stiff edges. The front cover easily detaches when you want to use your iPad, and can be clamped to the back cover so that you don’t lose it. I am not sure if I like the idea of the case being split up into two pieces, but the idea might grow on me over time. It might have been more suitable to have the two pieces attached in some sort of swinging design.

The interior of the case is made of a harder leather and is available in many different colors

The interior of the case is a harder leather surface that is embossed with Vaja’s logo. If you are willing to wait about 25 days, Vaja Cases will handcraft this case for you in custom colors of your choice. There is a wide variety of colors to pick from for both the interior and exterior of the case. If you are unwilling to wait, you can choose from the two standard choices of Black/Red or Black/Lime Green. It is also available in a limited edition Mamut design for $50 extra.

There are appropriate openings for all ports

There are appropriate openings for the dock connector, volume controls, speakers, and all other ports. However, that is only true when the front piece of the case is taken off. Otherwise, the dock connector is fully covered and the speakers are only partially exposed. However, I wouldn’t imagine that you would be using the speakers with this lid on anyways.

Score: ★★★★★

The Ivolution Top provides nearly full protection of your iPad thanks to its front and back pieces. The metal insert next to the volume controls does not make contact with the iPad, so you don’t have to worry about it causing any scratches.

The metal insert on the back side of the case; does not make contact with the iPad

Albeit having openings for all necessary ports, this case will likely not scratch or dent these surfaces because the leather creates a stiff lip around the entire device. However, there’s still a slim possibility of scratching  your device, so you’ll have to exercise a little extra caution when using your iPad.

Value For Money

Regardless of how luxurious it is, there’s no hiding the fact that Vaja cases are expensive. The Ivolution Top retails for $150, and many other accessories in their iPad lineup are plus, plus, plus. Even so, you are paying for top notch, handmade quality. You’re also paying for genuine padded leather that is almost unrivaled.

If you don’t really need the front cover, Vaja also sells the Ivolution Grip for $50 less. It is the same case that you see here without the front piece. This may suit you better if you have a screen protector or a sleeve. You’ll have to look up this accessory on Vaja’s website as their site does not provide any direct links to products.

Final Thoughts

The Ivolution Top can be summed up in two words: luxuriously expensive. If you’re geared towards high-end accessories for your iPad, then Vaja Cases is right up your ally. If you’re looking for a Vaja case for less than three digits, you’re wasting your time. Just like a nice car, the luxury comes at a cost. If you have the money, you won’t be let down!
