The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Verizon will offer an unlimited data plan for $30 to compete with AT&T. The plan will only be available for a limited time before Verizon moves to a tiered pricing structure.
AT&T offered an unlimited data plan last year, but phased it out due to download-hungry iPhone users. The plan has been grandfathered in for many subscribers, and Verizon does not want to give these potential customers an excuse to not switch.
“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot,” he said. Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T, he said. The country’s No. 2 carrier still has millions of subscribers grandfathered into unlimited plans they signed up for before AT&T switched to tiered pricing last summer.
