Apple Removes WikiLeaks App from the App Store

Apple may be joining the ranks of Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Bank of America, and many other corporations with their recent removal of an unofficial WikiLeaks application from the App Store. The $1.99 app displayed the WikiLeaks Twitter feed along with leaked documents (which are available online for free), and donated 50% of the proceeds directly to WikiLeaks. At the moment, it’s next to impossible to easily donate to the WikiLeaks cause.

Apple’s official statement regarding the removal references sections 14.1 and 22.1 of the App Store Guidelines.

“We removed WikiLeaks because it violated developer guidelines. An app must comply with all local laws. It may not put an individual or target group in harms way.”

When asked to elaborate about who, exactly, was being put in harms way, Apple declined to comment. An official explanation is expected in 1-2 days. Until then, hold off on any snap judgments.
