Australian police successfully managed to recover a stolen iPhone by chasing down the would-be thief with a police helicopter. The police were able to track its location using Find My iPhone.
Using a helicopter to track down an Apple product may sound like overkill (and honestly, it really is), but the chopper was already patrolling the skies in that particular area.
When the thief noticed that the helicopter had its lasers locked-on, he ditched his bike and attempted to flee on a tram, but the police had units on the ground who apprehended him. He was charged with “burglary, theft, possessing cannabis and handling the proceeds of crime.”
With the release of iOS 4.2.1, Apple made the Find My iPhone service free, so there is no reason not to install it. Note, it only works with the iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, and iPad, and doesn’t include a police helicopter.
