Killing Zombies Are All the Rage, But You Can Go Old School, Too

With players enjoy blowing zombies away in Rage/Rage HD, or pitting plants against them in Plants vs. Zombies, or numerous other apps, it might be nice to revisit how the zombie craze all began.  Zombie fans may argue the origins of the genre, but none can doubt the influence of the cult classic film, Night of the Living Dead.  Directed by George Romero on a shoestring budget and released in 1968, the film introduced the concept of the zombie apocalypse.  A cross-section of society are holed up in a rural farmhouse, fighting each other and the undead.  The film is now part of the public domain and there are apps which allow the user to stream or download the entire film for $.99 to $1.99.  But be careful – some apps contain the entire movie and can take up over 350 MB of precious storage.  Too old school?  If you’re a fan of the AMC series The Walking Dead, you can read the original comic series right on your iDevice.

Read on for more information about these apps.

The Night of the Living Dead HD app is only 76 MB, until you download the movie within the app.  Then an additional 500 MB has to slowly sent to your device over Wifi.  The quality of the viewing experience is great.  Extras include some wallpapers and the ability to share iconic images on social networks.  It’s made for the iPad, running iOS 3.2 or later.

The Night of the Living Dead Feature Film app is 1.5 MB, as it streams the movie to your device.  It is currently 99 cents and works on the iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad running iOS 3.1.2 or later.

If you’ve seen the movie a few (or more than a few) times and just want to play with your favorite lines, there’s the Night of the Living Dead Soundboard.  It places 20 of your favorite zombie movie sound bites in the palm of your hand.  It is also 99 cents, compatible on the iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad running iOS 3.1.3 or later.

Finally,  the newest version of zombie mayhem also comes to the iPod/iPhone/iPad in the form of The Walking Dead.  The AMC show is based upon the comic book series by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore.  A dedicated reader is available with a free copy of issue #1.  Subsequent issues cost $1.99.  It is compatible with the iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad running iOS 3.1 or later.

Fans of the TV show can download the AMC Mobile app and get additional content (including spoilers) about the show, characters and episodes.

Note: you must be 17 years or older to download the above apps, with the exception of the AMC Mobile app.
