Twitter for iOS Receives Push Notifications

The official Twitter application for iOS just received a major update, allowing it to send SMS or Push notifications for @mentions and direct messages. Push notifications are a huge help if you’re an avid Twitter user that needs to stay current with your messages without having to constantly refresh the app. Currently, 3rd party apps that wish to do the same are still required to run their own servers, a la Boxcar, and it’s unknown if Twitter will open up their new native Push service to outside applications.

Whenever an account that you follow mentions you, you’ll immediately receive a notification. You’ll know who is talking to or about you on Twitter, and you’ll be able to continue the conversation in real-time. Notifications for @mentions will initially be available on SMS and on the latest version of Twitter for iPhone, which you can download today from the App Store.

This update also includes a number of improvements, bugfixes, and enhanced timeline viewing on the iPad.
